Clay’s first experience hearing live

music was as a boy at Holy Trinity

Church in the small port town of San

Pedro California. His mom would take him

and his younger brother to church every Sunday

morning and being a music lover herself, she favored

Holy Trinity's "music mass." Each week during this

particular mass, a small group of musicians consisting of

piano, bass and drums would play intermittently during the mass.

Additionally, they would be regularly joined by the addition

of a flautist or guitarist or cellist or any myriad of talented

local musicians; and always there was the choir. Clay loved

every minute of it from the first minute, and he always

acknowledged that it was the joy and wonder of this

first experience of living, breathing music that was the

seed of his desire to embrace and create music

in his own life.
